Guess the dog breed

Guess the dog breed is a daily game about where dogs come from. One breed out of 359 is the answer and you have six guesses, and every miss tells you how far its homeland sits from the answer's and which way to go. It is a geography puzzle wearing a dog costume, so the winning move is to think about countries of origin rather than about size or coat.

What a miss tells you

A miss returns the distance between the two breeds' countries of origin, a direction, and a score out of 100. Two breeds from the same country score identically, which is the quirk worth knowing: when a guess comes back at maximum closeness without being right, you have found the country and the remaining work is picking the breed.

A worked round

The answer is the Shiba Inu and you open with the Border Collie. The distance comes back around 9,000 km pointing east, which points at Asia. Guess the Akita and the distance drops to zero while the answer stays wrong, so the country is Japan. The clue ladder has already given you the hemisphere and the first letter, and the third guess lands it.

The clues

Six clues sit above the board and one opens after every wrong guess, running broad to specific: bred in, hemisphere, letters, starts with, country starts with, country.

Common questions

Is it about the breed's appearance?

No. Feedback is based on where the breed was developed, so two dogs that look nothing alike can score the same if they come from the same country.

How many breeds are there?

359, drawn from Wikidata, covering recognised breeds with a documented country of origin.

What are the six clues?

Where it was bred, hemisphere, the number of letters in the name, the letter it starts with, the letter its country starts with, and the country.
