Guess the mountain

Guess the mountain is a daily game about height. One peak out of 698 is the answer, you get six guesses, and every miss tells you how far off the elevation is and whether to climb or descend. Knowing a few reference peaks and their rough heights is most of the skill, because the feedback orders the whole field by a single number.

What a miss tells you

A miss returns the difference in metres, an arrow pointing higher or lower, and a score out of 100. Height alone will not finish a round, because many peaks sit within a few metres of each other, so the clue ladder does the last part of the work: continent first, then a height band, then the letters and the first letter of the name. A name that opens with a word every peak shares, Mount or Cerro or Pico, has that word set aside before the letters are counted, and the clue names the word it set aside.

A worked round

The answer is Denali at 6,190 m and you open with Mont Blanc at 4,806 m. The arrow points up and the gap is a little under 1,400 m, which removes the Alps and most of Europe. Guess Aconcagua at 6,962 m and the arrow flips down with a smaller gap, so the answer is between them. The continent clue says North America, and little else stands that high there.

The clues

Six clues sit above the board and one opens after every wrong guess, running broad to specific: continent, height band, letters, starts with, height to the nearest 500 m, height.

Common questions

Where do the heights come from?

Wikidata, using the commonly cited summit elevation for each peak.

Are all 1,069 mountains famous?

No. Only the 698 with a wide readership can be the answer, and the rest are there so typing them works. The pool is broad, so the height feedback narrows the field and the continent and letter clues finish it.

Do I have to type "Mount"?

No. Everest, Mt Everest and Mount Everest are the same guess, and accents and apostrophes can be left off: aiguille d argentiere finds Aiguille d'Argentière. Where two peaks share a short name the full name is needed, since the game will not pick one for you.

What are the six clues?

Continent, height band, the number of letters in the name, the letter it starts with, the height to the nearest 500 m, and the exact height. Both letter clues ignore a leading Mount, Mont, Cerro or Pico, since a third of the peaks share one, and say so when they do.
