Guess the city

Guess the city is a daily game about placing somewhere on the globe from distance alone. One city is the answer, you get six guesses, and the pool runs to 750 cities worldwide. As with the country game the feedback is geographic rather than alphabetical, so a good guess is one that narrows the map rather than one that shares a letter.

What a miss tells you

Each miss gives the distance from your guess to the answer, the direction to move, and a score out of 100. The scale is tighter than the country game because cities sit closer together, so a guess 300 km out already scores high. When two guesses bracket the answer from opposite sides, the answer is on the line between them and the third guess should split it.

A worked round

The answer is Lyon and you start with Paris. That comes back about 390 km with the arrow pointing southeast. Guess Milan and you get roughly 400 km pointing west. You now have the answer boxed between two cities you know, the clue ladder has given you the continent and the hemisphere, and Lyon is the obvious city on that line.

The clues

Six clues sit above the board and one opens after every wrong guess, running broad to specific: continent, hemisphere, population, letters, starts with, country.

Common questions

Which cities are included?

A set of 750 drawn from Wikidata, weighted toward cities most people would recognise rather than every municipality on record.

Does spelling matter?

No. You pick from a suggestion list of real answers, so accents and alternative spellings resolve for you.

What are the six clues?

Continent, hemisphere, population, the number of letters in the name, the letter it starts with, and the country it is in.

The other games

All seven guessing games.
